Geo What? How Geofencing May Change the Face of E-mail Marketing

Geofencing

Geo…what? You may immediately imagine geofencing to be the same as geocaching—the recreational activity that involves hunting and finding hidden objects with GPS. Still confused? All we’ll say is, Pokemon Snap. That’s geocaching.

Geofencing is NOT the same as geocaching and definitely has no synergy with Pokemon Snap. Geofencing, is however the next hot tool for marketers interested in whittling down their target audience to a science to ensure their marketing campaigns remain as relevant as ever.

In short, geofencing works with location-based digital marketing tools to allow marketers to send messages to smartphone users in specific regions. But geofencing isn’t relegated to mobile devices. It works also for desktops, laptops, and tablets.

Through the use of GPS or radio frequency identification to define a geographic boundary, a virtual target zone is established, allowing marketers to set up triggered e-mails, texts, or app notifications when the device enters or leaves the targeted area.

So how in the world would geofencing benefit your marketing strategy?

The extreme targeting available with geofencing allows marketers to reach people in a way never imagined before. For example, say a cell phone company establishes a geo-fence to target prospects leaving a rival cell phone company. Sending them an amazing offer when their minds are still digesting the competition’s may be what’s needed to seal a deal. The offer, of course, can come via e-mail, text message, or both.

Companies hosting or attending events are geofencing location spaces to attract customers to specific booths, VIP spaces, or workshops. Email campaigns can even be set up prior to events to encourage attendees to check their e-mails throughout the day for special offers.

Think of geofencing as an automation tool that offers customization tactics designed to keep marketing campaigns as relevant as they come. Because geofencing is a new technology, the possible integrations with e-mail is just getting off the ground. As new marketing technologies continue to develop, the possibilities for innovation abound.
