In this edition of “The Power Behind PowerInbox” series, we’re excited to introduce our Director of Advertising Sales, Phil Reich!Phil has been with PowerInbox for 3 years. He joined us following a lustrous career in technology startups after he graduated from the Yeshiva University in New York. Phil grew up in central New Jersey in a small town called Edison. He has been married for 11 years and has 3 children — 2 girls and a boy!
Let’s learn a bit more about Phil!
1. What do you love most about your role at PowerInbox?
I love the type of advertisers we work with — we work a lot with Financial and DTC brands. I also really like what we sell here at PowerInbox because I’ve been in performance marketing for most of my career. One of the main things I like though is the tradeoff between the challenges and the reward of seeing advertisers get that ROI that they were looking for. Sometimes, it requires a lot of work to get into the weeds and understand their metrics so they can take full advantage of what we offer, so when that happens it is extremely rewarding.
2. What advice do you have for someone also interested in that type of position?
You have to have thick skin, and you can’t be afraid to hear “no”. You can’t sell with any fear, especially when you sell a solution that a lot of brands haven’t heard of. You have to be creative enough to get them to engage with you and get them talking, but you have to be fearless because you’re going up against a lot of other bigger players. So, you have to be wiling to take on objections and not be afraid to lose the deal, but look at it as an opportunity to show them why you’re better.
3. Top 4 tools you can’t live without
- LinkedIn Sales Navigator for finding and prospecting leads.
- ZoomInfo for finding email addresses
- HubSpot – it has many benefits but a big one is that it lets you see email opens and clicks, which also helps you think of how you can adjust your email content to improve the engagement.
- My phone
4. Favorite PowerInbox event/memory/moment or favorite PowerInbox swag
My favorite moment was when we were in New Orleans for our company offsite in 2019. We went out late to a few music bars and there was one where you could play on stage, so I got up there and played guitar with a band on stage. It was a really cool moment. My favorite swag is the long-sleeve shirts with Under Amour logo.
5. What are some of your hobbies?
I play guitar and like to learn new songs. I’m also a runner (not marathons – just for exercise).
6. Favorite quote & why?
I have a favorite concept rather than quote. It’s “Emerson’s law of compensation”. Emerson says, if you want to get more, you have to give more. There is nothing in life that, to have it, you don’t have give up something else. For example, to be the most powerful man in the world like the US president, you have to give up your personal freedom. So, I live my life by that concept. I try to view every scenario through that lens. I ask myself “if I want more of something, what am I willing to give up?”
7. One piece of advice you’d give your younger self?
Work is not life. Enjoy the small moments. There were so many things I wasn’t present for in life because I was too afraid to miss out on something with the business. Find more time for yourself and the things that are important outside of work.
8. Superpower you’d choose & why?
Well, I’m in sales so I’d have to say — mind reading. My job would be much easier to do if I had that superpower.
9. Favorite place you’ve ever traveled to?
Israel! There are a few reasons why. First of all, I have family there. And every time I visit, I find something new that I had never seen before. The opportunities are endless. Plus, it’s closely connected to my heritage.
10. Biggest guilty pleasure & why
11. What’s your favorite book & why
“David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants” by Malcolm Gladwell. It talks about the concept of “the little guy vs. big guy” and the little guy wins. It wasn’t a miracle that he won. Sometimes, your disadvantage is the reason why you’re successful. Everyone thinks to get from point A to point B, you need to take a linear path, but not everyone can follow that same path. And those people have to find creative ways to do it and are even more successful because of it.
12. What’s at the top of your bucket list?
To swim with sharks.
13. What’s your hidden talent?
I can do magic tricks that will impress a 7 year old.
14. How do you manage work/life balance?
It has changed because of COVID. I used to love the commute to and from the office because it was a clear separation between work and home. But now, I close the laptop, and I go right into chaos. So, I had to find other ways to have that time to myself. I started to wake up earlier in the morning for some personal time, and I also exercise in the evening.
15. What’s your biggest accomplishment from your time at PowerInbox?
