We are excited to announce the launch of a new PowerInbox blog series to give you an in(box)side look at the people who make PowerInbox what it is: the employees!
First up: Julien Templier.
Julien is PowerInbox’s Senior VP of Engineering. He oversees the Product, Engineering, and Architecture teams to establish technical strategy for our product and align it with the long-term vision of the company.
He joined the team as a Software Developer in late 2011 when PowerInbox was only six people strong. Although he originally hails from France, Julien moved to the U.S. 13 years ago after completing his Master’s degree in Computer Engineering and now lives in Boston with his wife and two adorable children.
Let’s get to know Julien…
1. What are the top 5 tools you can’t live without?
I work with both Windows, Mac and iOS devices, so I tend to favor multi-platform tools unless I have a lot invested in an existing app.
- Slack for day to day communications
- Microsoft To-Do to track todo items
- Spark / Outlook
- IntelliJ IDEA for prototyping and internal tooling
- Tower / SmartGit for source control
2. What is your favorite aspect of working remotely?
Having the ability to walk my kids to school every morning, enjoy a nice cup of coffee and walk back home, instead of spending an hour commuting.
3. What has been your most memorable PowerInbox event?
I really enjoyed attending a data science conference with a group of PowerInbox employees last summer. Working remotely is awesome, but in a still small company, it is easy to forget about the benefits of building a network and participating in local events. It reminded me to encourage our engineers to join their local tech groups and expand their horizons.
4. Where is the best place you’ve ever traveled?
Lithuania, a few years after the fall of the wall. I was still quite young at the time, but I remember the impression it left on me and some of the stories from the people we met there.
5. What is your favorite quote & why?
“J’aime le travail : il me fascine. Je peux rester des heures à le regarder.”
“I like work: it fascinates me. I can sit and look at it for hours.” – Jerome K. Jerome
I remember my dad giving me a postcard with that quote on it while I was in the middle of my classes preparatoires. These days I can appreciate the irony, but back then it didn’t seem all that funny!
6. What’s the nerdiest thing you do in your free time?
I used to disassemble old adventure games with IDA as part of the ScummVM project. It has been a while since I was able to carve enough time to contribute. Figuring out old file format and game logic was something very stimulating and enjoyable.
7. What is your biggest guilty pleasure & why?
Canelés. There used to be a bakery close to where I lived in Boston that had them. I was there too often for my own good.
8. What’s at the top of your bucket list?
Crossing the Pyrenees Mountains via the GR-10 over a summer. I hope to do so with my oldest kids when he gets older, if I am still in shape!
9. What’s your biggest accomplishment from your time at PowerInbox?
A couple years ago, I would have said our billing & reporting system. It scaled from processing a handful of ad impression events per day to hundreds of millions with limited changes. These days my biggest accomplishment is empowering my team to replace this system by something much better that will serve us for years to come.
10. What’s something you want to do in the next year professionally that you haven’t been able to do before?
I want to spend more time with the sales, marketing and finance teams, learning more about budgeting, business planning and marketing strategy.
We hope you enjoyed learning a little bit more about the people that drive the power in PowerInbox. Stay tuned for our next employee feature!
