In this edition of “The Power Behind PowerInbox” series, we’re excited to introduce one of our talented software engineers, Ben Conklin!
He grew up in Pennsylvania just outside of Pittsburgh. (Go Pens.) He joined the Army as an interrogator right out of high school, then had a couple of Army-ish jobs as an interrogation instructor and intelligence analyst. He eventually decided to get out of that field and went to school for Computer Science. He joined Domino’s in 2015 as a .NET developer where he met John Kuempel, who pried him away to come and join PowerInbox.
Let’s learn a bit more about Ben!
1. What excites you the most about your role at PowerInbox?
Honestly, I am most excited about the work. The type of work I will be doing on our Platform team is exactly the type of software development I enjoy.
2. What advice do you have for someone also interested in that type of position?
Keep learning. Understand that you don’t know what you don’t know.
3. What are some of your hobbies?
Video games. Some of my earliest memories as a child revolve around Mario, Bubble Bobble and Super C (Contra).
4. Favorite quote & why?
Be excellent to each other. – Bill S Preston Esquire
Sure, it is from a movie, but how much nicer would the world we live in be if, as a rule, we were all excellent to each other?
5. One piece of advice you’d give your younger self?
Learn another language. The older I get the more I want to learn another language (Japanese), but I also have less and less time to dedicate to that sort of thing.
6. Superpower you’d choose & why?
Super Saiyan. That 50x multiplier on physical abilities is pretty appealing.
7. What’s the coolest thing about your job?
You get to be a lifelong learner when you’re a software engineer. There’s always a new better thing out there to learn. You can’t survive being complacent – and if that’s your thing its great.
8. What’s the nerdiest thing you do in your free time?
I custom paint GameCube controllers. I’m a huge Smash Bros. fan.
9. Favorite place you’ve ever traveled to?
From anywhere – back to my house. There’s nothing better than being able to relax and do what I want from the comfort of my own home. The only thing the pandemic has changed for me – I no longer need excuses to stay home.
10. What’s at the top of your bucket list?
Visit Japan during cherry blossom season.
11. What animal best describes you & why
Bear (have you seen me?)
